There was a time when I thought I was a complete failure as a mother. My four-year-old son, Leo, and I were caught in a constant downward spiral of „No,“ „Don’t do that,“ and mutual frustration. Every morning was a struggle, and every evening ended in exhaustion. All I could see was what wasn’t working.
Then I came across the Marte Meo method. At first, the phrase „development through one’s own efforts“ sounded like a beautiful dream to me, but putting it into practice changed everything. I learned to radically shift my perspective. Instead of constantly correcting Leo, I began to observe him closely: When does he cooperate? When does he seek my gaze?
I started to point out and acknowledge these tiny, positive moments. When he put on his shoes by himself—even if it took forever—I would calmly say, „You’re putting on your shoes all by yourself.“ No grand praise, just being seen.
The change was magical. By stopping trying to fight his weaknesses and starting to build on his existing strengths, our entire relationship became more relaxed. Of course, we still have stressful days today—but we’ve rediscovered our connection. Marte Meo has not only helped me understand my child better, but also helped me regain confidence in myself as a mother.
